Recently, since the update to 2.8 i’ve had problems with plugins unpacking. Everytime I would attempt to upload via ftp or directly install a plugin through the wordpress admin – the plugin would fail to install and give me the lingering error “unpacking the plugin”. One day I let this sit for over an hour; nothing happened.
But I’ve also been having a problem updating the database with the new 2.9.1!
I tried to do an automatic update, that failed. I tried to do a simple scripts update, it showed the database was updated, however wordpress admin said it was not; I even manually updated via FTP, and can you guess it? That failed too!
So, the fix? After a frustrating 30 minutes of trying to do this I went on ahead and disabled all of the plugins (I have 15 plugins) Anway, after I disabled the plugins I ran the automatic wordpress update and it worked! And then I activated 14 of the plugins. Then updated one of them – finally with ease.
The Culprit was a plugin; and you won’t bet which one it was! Backupify..offered by backupify.com (that I use to backup my online world) Yes I use the service, but what I found out that it’s doing is just backing up wordpress to it’s own folder on my server..but is it backing up data to their server too? hmm. I don’t want my data backed up on my server, in case the Host should go down and I lose all the info – Or wordpress becomes defunct and I lose that information because Backupify is backing up the data into the actual wordpress file. hmm.
Anyway, if you are having a problem updating plugins or updating to the newest version of WordPress – Just disable all of the plugins – then update wordpress first, lastly, activate the most popular plugins. Usually from my experience and from the online world, new plugins that aren’t tested well enough can cause problems with wordpress.
I’m glad I got mine fixed, I thought for a moment there that I would have to back up the posts, delete wordpress and start from scratch all over again! Thank goodness.
Cheers.

You should see a copy in your Backupify account too. We just back it up to your server so that we can send it to ours.
Ah, ok that I did not know. Well, I can’t use the plugin on the site to backup the data, it seems there is a bit of a problem using it on my server. should I just enable the plugin when I want to back it up?
Fixed it for me. Thanks a bunch buddy. Has anyone told Backupify about this issue?
I searched all over google and spent hours and hours trying to fix this simple problem that so many people encounter… and the answer’s right here. This fixes it… simply disable all your plugins before you try anything else if you’re trying to fix that unpacking the package error in WordPress.
